Big Brother is a reality television show in which a group of people live together in a large house, isolated from the outside world but continuously watched by television cameras. Each series lasts for around three months, and there are usually fewer than 15 participants. The housemates try to win a cash prize by avoiding periodic evictions from the house. The idea for the show is said to come during a brainstorm session at the production house of John de Mol Produkties (an independent part of Endemol) on 4 September 1997. The first Big Brother broadcast was in the Netherlands in 1999 on the Veronica TV channel. It was picked up by Germany, Portugal, USA, UK, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and Italy the following year and became a world-wide sensation. Since then it has been a prime-time hit in almost 70 countries. The show's name comes from George Orwell's 1948 dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (see Big Brother). 

Made in Chelsea is a reality television series that is broadcast by E4. It is set in the wealthy Chelsea district of London and is similar to ITV2's The Only Way Is Essex. The show follows the lives of Ollie Locke, Spencer Matthews, Jamie Laing, Fredrik Ferrier, Francis Boulle, Hugo Taylor, Millie Mackintosh, Amber Atherton, Alexandra Felstead, Francesca Hull, Rosie Fortescue, Caggie Dunlop, Gabriella Ellis and Kimberley Garner.

The Only Way Is Essex is an ITV2 reality television show based in Essex. It shows "real people in modified situations, saying unscripted lines but in a structured way." It debuted on October 10, 2010, it follows the lives of young adults: Mark Wright, Jessica Wright, Kirk Norcross, Amy Childs, Lauren Goodger, Sam Faiers and their friends. The show is primarily filmed in Brentwood close to London and shows their lives as young, rich Essex boys and girls. The show is filmed only a few days in advance and Series 1 ran initially for four weeks weeks, with two episodes a week. It is narrated by Denise Van Outen, who is from Basildon, Essex. The show has been described by the Daily Mirror as Great Britain's answer to The Hills and Jersey Shore
