The Cape Town-born designer Mik Serfontaine left his hometown at the age of 18. He led a gypsy-like, globetrotting existence until the Los Angeles music scene captured his attention. Inspired by its flamboyancy and originality, Serfontaine interpreted the rock 'n' roll spirit in vintage denim. He opened his first boutique in 1995 in Venice Beach, where he designed his first full collection. In 2002, he debuted his Mezzanine jean, a style that combined rope stitching and a perfectly worn-in wash, dubbed the collision wash by its designer. Serfontaine's sexy, slightly tough looking jeans have morphed into a much replicated fashion staple.
