Chris Rossi and brother Luke Rossi formed a company by catering to the custom leather needs of celebrities and family friends in Malibu, California. While growing up in Malibu Chris was able gain great experience in leather craftsmanship while working for Bill Wall Leather and with Travis Walker. After working with leather for many years, Chris was ready to take it to the next level. Chris started to design many unique pieces such as handbags and wallets on his own. Brother Luke Rossi began working with Chris, and after about two years they decided to form their own company, called Kettle Black. The expertise that Luke brought to the table, turned out to be the perfect balance that they needed in order to expand. Soon after, they started producing many new and exciting products, including intricate motorcycle seats for custom choppers, boots, wallets, belts, handbags, and various other custom items including furniture.
Throughout a short period of time, Kettle Black was inspired to create many different kinds of products. They began designing products for their sister Jenny Rossi, who manages a popular boutique in Malibu called Planet Blue. Kettle Black started making handbags and belts for Planet Blue as well as their very popular customized sheepskin boots. Kettle Black’s client list includes celebrities such as Usher, the Olsen Twins, Pamela Anderson, Minnie Driver, Paris Hilton, and Jessica Simpson.
Luke and Chris both grew up in Malibu, and they both grew up loving the ocean. Chris was a lifeguard in Malibu who enjoyed surfing, and singing in various local punk rock bands. Luke grew up fishing, surfing and freedive spearfishing in Malibu’s ocean, along with listening to classic rock albums from his friend’s rockstar parents. Throughout life in the fast lane Luke and Chris were able to focus on their true passion to design unique leather products. They wanted to be able to make something that not only looks unique, but is virtually timeless as well as heirloom quality.
From growing up on the beach, Luke and Chris wanted to make products that were able to last. Leather goods that were able to withstand the elements while living near the ocean such as, the air, the sun, the water, and the sand. So they wanted to incorporate only the finest quality leather and exotic hides to their work. All work is hand-crafted by the Rossi brothers in their downtown Los Angeles studio. Chris and Luke take great pride in being working artists who produce unique quality leather designs.
