The red carpet will soon be rolled out for the sixth annual Scottish Fashion Awards, which will light up the city next week. Influential figures in world fashion and retail will jet into Glasgow for the star-studded event at Glasgow Science Centre on Wednesday evening. And a host of leading local names are in the running to take home some of the 13 glittering trophies at the black tie event.

Arguably one of the most prestigious titles is the Scottish Designer of the Year. Reigning title-holder Jonathan Saunders, the Rutherglen-born print maestro championed by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, is up against Newarthill-born golden boy Christopher Kane, whose fans include Claudia Schiffer, plus Glasgow School of Art graduate Louise Gray. The Young Designer category has no fewer than four Glasgow connections – Kerry Nixon, who famously employed Keira Knightley’s services at her Easter wedding in Pollokshields Burgh Hall, is a finalist alongside Jennifer Coyle and Lyndsay Pagan’s edgy label Obscure Couture.

Cardonald College alumnus Marc Ross, whose fans include Cheryl Cole and who has worked with Anya Hindmarch, Burberry and Barbour, is also nominated in the Young Designer category, in addition to Glasgow School of Art knitwear specialist Alice Palmer.

A Glasgow-based online retailer beloved of Katie Price and an expanding diamond chain that began life in the Argyll Arcade are among the finalists for the Retailer of the Year prize.Family-run e-tail business Spoiled Brat has grown from a children’s clothing store into offering the latest must-have designers, while Rox jewellers founded by Kyron Keogh and Grant Mitchell now has four Scottish branches.
